Fedellos do Couto & Peixes

Sinds 2013 zijn Curro en Jesús samen met Luis Tobada gestart met hun Fedellos do Couto project. De wijngaarden waar de opbrengsten eerst van werden verkocht wordt hier nu wijn gemaakt. Op de zeven hectare grond die zij bewerken staan soms wel acht tot negen druivenrassen door elkaar! Het gebied Ribeira Sacra staat bekend om zijn prachtige natuur. Scherpe kliffen, riviertjes en beekjes en flinke rotspartijen. Later komen daar wijngaarden in de DO Ribeiro bij op grote hoogte. Karakteristieke wijnen met karakter en puurheid!

A pale and bright varietal Bastardo (a.k.a. Trousseau), the 2023 Bastarda is a little shy, perhaps a little affected by the recent bottling a month before I tasted it. It's serious, elegant and nuanced, with faint floral notes, hints of blood orange peel and white pepper. They are hoping to plant some more of the variety, because it works very well in sandy and granite soils. It's delicate, elegant and fine-boned, with a vibrant mouthfeel and effervescent acidity and the salinity from the granite soils. Delicious. 5,500 bottles produced. At Fedellos, they suffered in the very warm and dry 2022 vintage, and 2023 was warm and wet with mildew and a lower crop. They harvested 70% to 80% before the rains during the harvest. They keep increasing their collection of vineyards, purchasing and regrafting some plots; in total, they work around two hectares and buy grapes from seven to eight hectares. They produce around 45,000 bottles. Unfortunately, they had only bottled a handful of wines by the time I tasted with them.
